Travel nurse housing guide

What to check before choosing assignment housing.

A good short-term home supports the schedule, budget, and recovery time that come with healthcare work. Use this guide to compare options consistently.

Furnished and ready for a real stay

Confirm that the advertised furnishings include a bed, seating, cooking basics, linens if needed, dependable internet, and working climate control. Ask for a current inventory and recent photos, especially for stays lasting 30 days to 13 weeks.

Understand the all-in monthly cost

Compare rent against your housing allowance only after adding utilities, Wi-Fi, parking, pet charges, cleaning fees, deposits, taxes, and any payment-processing costs. Request every recurring and one-time fee in writing.

Plan around the hospital and shift

Distance alone does not describe a commute. Test the route around your expected shift change and ask about secure parking, public transportation, building access, daytime noise, blackout curtains, and self check-in.

Protect yourself before sending money

Independently verify the owner or manager, property address, lease terms, cancellation policy, and payment instructions. Avoid irreversible payment methods and pressure to pay before a live or recorded walkthrough. A directory badge is not a substitute for your own checks.

Questions to ask

  • Do the available dates cover the entire assignment and possible extension?
  • What happens if the assignment is canceled early?
  • Which utilities and services are included or capped?
  • Are pets, guests, roommates, and overnight schedules permitted?
  • Who handles maintenance and after-hours access issues?
